Cumberland is hitting .365 this season, with seven home runs, 35 RBIs and 20 steals for Class A Lake Elsinore. Cumberland has 91 hits in 60 games, and he currently ranks third in the California League in hitting.
Cumberland will play for the United States team in the Futures Game, which means that he could well end up facing Castro, who will play for the World team.
Castro, a native of the Dominican Republic, is 4-2 with a 2.87 ERA in 14 games with the Double-A San Antonio Missions of the Texas League. Opponents are hitting .211 against Castro, who was the Padres' 2009 Minor League Pitcher of the Year.
Cumberland was one of six Lake Elsinore players who were on the California League roster for Tuesday's All-Star Game against the Carolina League All-Stars, a game that was played in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The Padres also had six players from their low Class A team in Fort Wayne who played in the Midwest League All-Star Game on Tuesday.
