Black happy with Young's progress

WASHINGTON -- Right-hander Chris Young, on the 60-day disabled list due to right shoulder inflammation, threw catch early Wednesday afternoon at Nationals Park.

Young began playing catch on June 18, but had shut down his throwing program on June 29 because of soreness. Padres manager Bud Black said he likes the recent progress Young is making.

"It's still early in the process, but CY feels much better now than he did going into his throwing program before," Black said. "I went out and watched him, and his arm action I felt looked much freer. It didn't look as if he was guarding anything. I'm happy for him. Let's keep our fingers crossed."

In his one start this season, Young earned the win as the Padres defeated the D-backs, 6-3, on April 6. He did not allow a run on one hit in six innings.

Young left Nationals Park early to return home to San Diego, where his wife, Liz is expected to have the couple's second child.
