The Padres scored five runs in the eighth and ninth innings as they kick-started their record-setting 22-6 month. Brian Giles snapped out of an 0-for-22 slump with four hits, including the game-winner in the top of the eighth.
May 6: San Diego 6, St. Louis 5
Trevor Hoffman recorded his 400th career save as the Padres pulled out another late-inning victory. Giles was at it again as he tripled in the tying run and then scored the go-ahead run in the seventh.
May 7: San Diego 5, St. Louis 4
The Padres rallied for four runs in the fifth off Chris Carpenter as Adam Eaton defeated the Cardinal ace. Mark Sweeney capped the big inning with a two-run double that broke a 3-3 tie.
May 8: St. Louis 15, San Diego 5
San Diego's six-game winning streak was snapped after the Cardinals pounced for 11 first-inning runs, eight coming with two outs. The Padres hit four homers in the losing effort, including blasts by Giles and Ryan Klesko.
July 26: St. Louis 4, San Diego 2
The Padres fell back to .500 for the first time since early May after losing their eighth straight. San Diego scored two runs in the sixth, but was unable to completely erase a four-run deficit.
July 27: San Diego 2, St. Louis 1
Robert Fick hit the game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth off Cardinals starter Jason Marquis as the Padres won the middle game of the three-game series. Jake Peavy struck out 10 in eight innings as he and Hoffman combined on a three-hitter.
July 28: St. Louis 11, San Diego 3
San Diego couldn't defeat Carpenter for the second time as the Padres dropped the finale. The Cardinals scored in seven of the nine innings as the Padres lost their third straight series.
