PHOENIX -- Everth Cabrera got his first career start at second base Saturday against the D-backs, though manager Bud Black didn't have any trepidation about inserting the shortstop at a different position.
"I suspect Everth will be fine," Black said. "He's fine there."
Cabrera, after playing 154 games at shortstop for the Padres since the beginning of last season, started at second base as Jerry Hairston got the day off.
"Jerry has been out there a lot," Black said.
Cabrera was primarily a second baseman in the Rockies' organization before the Padres selected him in the Rule 5 Draft in December of 2008.
Cabrera appeared in 174 games at second base over four seasons in the Rockies' system.
