Padres add Moseley to rotation mix

Padres add Moseley to rotation mix

SAN DIEGO -- The Padres' starting rotation for 2011 appears to be rounding into shape.

On Monday, the Padres announced that they have agreed to a one-year deal for $900,000 with right-handed pitcher Dustin Moseley.

Moseley, who turns 29 on Dec. 26, was 4-4 with a 4.96 ERA in 16 games last season for the Yankees in 2010, including four starts.

The Yankees non-tendered Moseley earlier this month.

Moseley got an endorsement from San Diego manager Bud Black, who was the pitching coach in Anaheim for seven seasons and saw the righty come up with the Angels.

Moseley went 8-7 with a 5.41 ERA in 80 games (32 starts) for the Angels from 2006-09 before signing with the Yankees in February.

The Padres are hoping a change of leagues and divisions as well as moving from the hitter-friendly Yankee Stadium to PETCO Park will help Moseley.

The Padres envision Moseley as having the potential to compete for the fifth-starter job, though he could certainly pitch in long relief.

The Padres' long reliever from last season, Edward Mujica, was traded to the Marlins last month in the Cameron Maybin deal.

Moseley tossed two scoreless innings with four strikeouts and was the winning pitcher in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series against the Rangers.

The Padres' starting rotation, if the season started today, would likely include Mat Latos, Clayton Richard, Tim Stauffer, Aaron Harang (signed earlier this month) and Moseley.

There's still a chance the Padres could add another starting pitcher before the start of the season as general manager Jed Hoyer and Black have stressed the importance of depth on the pitching side.

The Padres lost Jon Garland -- who won 14 games last season -- to free agency. He has since signed with the Dodgers.
