PEORIA, Ariz. -- Pitcher Mat Latos, who only a week ago appeared to be the front-runner to start on Opening Day, has instead landed on the 15-day disabled list with bursitis in his right shoulder.
Latos reported soreness in his shoulder last Wednesday, and he could hardly pull on a shirt the next day. A day later, though, Latos said his shoulder was beginning to feel better.
"He's turned a corner on this thing," Padres manager Bud Black said. "The medical staff feels good about it."

The Padres have maintained that there's no timetable for Latos to return, though he's set to play catch on Tuesday in Peoria.
Latos, a 14-game winner in 2010, will be placed on the disabled list retroactive to March 22. That means the soonest he could return would be April 6, the day the Padres play the Giants at PETCO Park
Latos had a 9.00 ERA this spring in four appearances.
The Padres announced on Friday that Tim Stauffer will start Opening Day on Thursday in St. Louis, and that Aaron Harang will start the home opener on April 5.
