On the hill for the Boston Red Sox is Tim Wakefield. The knuckleballer won his last two starts at home vs. two National League West teams: the Colorado Rockies and San Francisco Giants. But his last road game was a loss on June 6 to the Oakland Athletics, where he allowed three runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Young is looking for his seventh victory of the season and first for the month of June.

Wakefield has three game appearances vs. the Padres, which includes one career start for a 1-0 record. He was victorious in his last start of the season, on June 17 against the San Francisco Giants at Fenway Park. He surrendered five runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Padres second baseman Marcus Giles is 2-for-3 against Wakefield with two doubles.
