Peavy guns for win No. 10 against Sox

The Padres, set to close out their Interleague homestand against the Red Sox on Sunday afternoon, will unleash their ace Jake Peavy opposite the Red Sox's very own stud Josh Beckett.

This will be a battle between two of the best pitchers from their respective league. Peavy leads the National League with the lowest ERA (1.98) and the most strikeouts (110). His ERA is second best in the Majors, behind only the Athletics' Dan Haren (1.78).

In a strong American League, Beckett is 10-1 with a 3.14 ERA. Although he bests Peavy by just one win, their matchup is one to watch.

Beckett's (10-1) only loss of the year came from another NL West team, the Rockies on June 14. Nevertheless, Beckett's team is 11-5 in Interleague Play this season, and the Sox have won their last six road series against the NL West.

Peavy is looking for his third consecutive win, while the Padres try to finish their six-game homestand with a series win.

Pitching matchup
SD: RHP Jake Peavy (9-1, 1.98 ERA)
Peavy is 5-1 in nine career starts against the Red Sox. The right-hander is on a roll of sorts. His last two starts were wins against the Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and his only loss of the year was on April 30 against the Washington Nationals at PETCO Park.

BOS: RHP Josh Beckett (10-1, 3.14 ERA)
Beckett has five career starts against the Padres for a 4-1 record. The righty's last win was against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday. He pitched six shutout innings and allowed four hits while striking out three.

Player to watch
Russell Branyan is 4-for-8 against Beckett, with one double and two home runs. His last RBI was a solo home run on Wednesday against the Orioles, and it was the only run the Padres scored that day.
