Padres land Fuentes, Darnell in Futures Game
SAN DIEGO -- Two players will represent the Padres in the 13th annual XM All-Star Futures Game.

Third baseman James Darnell with Double-A San Antonio was named Thursday to the U.S. roster and outfielder Reymond Fuentes with Class A Lake Elsinore has been named to the World roster.

The Futures Game can be seen live on MLB.TV, ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD and followed live on MLB.com's Gameday on Taco Bell All-Star Sunday, July 10, at 3 p.m. PT. In addition, XM Radio will broadcast play-by-play coverage of the event live on XM 175. Major League Baseball, along with the Major League Baseball Scouting Bureau, MLB.com, Baseball America, USA Baseball and the 30 Major League Baseball clubs, selected the 25-man rosters for each club. Each organization is represented, and the World Team features players from 12 countries and territories. Players from all full-season Minor Leagues were eligible to participate.

The Padres were one of 20 teams to have two players named to the Futures Game roster this year. No team had more than two players named.

Fuentes is the No. 5-rated prospect in the Padres' organization and 10th outfielder overall by MLB.com. The 20-year-old center-fielder is hitting .294 with 18 RBIs and has a .354 on-base percentage. He's known for his speed and has stolen 30 bases for Lake Elsinore, the most on the team. Fuentes was a first-round Draft pick, 28th overall, by the Red Sox in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft. He came to the Padres in December as part of the Adrian Gonzalez trade.

In 67 games with San Antonio this season, Darnell has hit .346 with 16 home runs and 57 RBIs. Darnell leads the Missions in hits (89), doubles (24), home runs and RBIs. The Padres drafted Darnell in the second round, 69th overall, in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft.

Six current San Diego players have participated in the Futures Game: Ryan Ludwick (2001), Orlando Hudson (2002), outfielder Cameron Maybin (2006 and 2007) and pitchers Tim Stauffer (2004), Clayton Richard (2008) and Mat Latos (2009).

The Futures Game features many of the best Minor League prospects. In its history, dating to 1999, 79 players have competed in both the Futures Game and the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, including current Ludwick and Hudson.
