SAN FRANCISCO -- Padres left-hander Clayton Richard, who has not pitched since beating the San Francisco Giants here on July 4, underwent surgery to repair his left shoulder on Wednesday.
"He's projected to be ready by the first day of Spring Training, so there's no need for him to toss the ball or play catch," Black said.
Richard's current rehab consists of strength and range of motion exercises.
In other roster news, the Padres optioned right-hander Pat Neshek to Triple-A Tucson after he cleared optional waivers Wednesday. He was designated for assignment on Sunday.
