Mariners at the plate: First baseman Richie Sexson had a pair of singles and drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning. Catcher Kenji Johjima doubled home a run in the first inning and right fielder Mike Morse continued his torrid start with a run-scoring single -- his fourth hit in five Cactus League at-bats.

Padres at the plate: Khalil Greene doubled and scored a run, while Chip Ambres and Scott Hairston also delivered doubles.

Mariners on the mound: Right-hander Carlos Silva pitched two scoreless innings in his first outing with the Mariners. Silva, signed to a four-year, $48 million contract during the offseason, walked one, struck out one and surrendered one hit. Closer J.J. Putz pitched his first inning of the spring, surrendering an unearned run in the fifth.

Padres on the mound: Reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy went two innings, surrendering four hits and two runs, in his first outing the spring. Both runs scored with two outs in the first inning. Trevor Hoffman wobbled, surrendering four hits and two runs in one inning.

Cactus League records: Mariners 2-1, Padres 1-2.

Up next: The Mariners welcome their former manager, Lou Piniella, to the Peoria Sports Complex in a Cactus League game against the Cubs on Monday. Left-hander Jarrod Washburn makes his first Cactus League start, opposing Cubs right-hander Jon Lieber.
