Padres at the plate: San Diego leadoff hitter Scott Hairston -- who used to play for the Diamondbacks -- jumped on the first pitch of the game, sending it over the fence in left field for a home run. Hairston later added a two-run double for a 3-0 lead. Chase Headley broke a tie with a seventh-inning sacrifice fly. Will Venable then added a two-run single.

Diamondbacks at the plate: Eric Byrnes and Chris Snyder each had RBI singles in the fourth inning. Then in the fifth inning, Orlando Hudson tied the game with an RBI double in the fifth inning. Mark Reynolds added a double and a walk.

Padres on the mound: Starting pitcher Chris Young was sharp in his second start of the spring, tossing three scoreless -- and hitless -- innings with three strikeouts and only a leadoff walk to the other Chris Young. Relievers Kevin Cameron and Justin Hampson, in their first outings, allowed a combined three runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings.

Diamondbacks on the mound: Starting pitcher Doug Davis struggled, allowing three runs on four hits, including the home run to Hairston to start the game. Davis did strike out four. Matt Green followed with two scoreless innings while Tony Pena threw one scoreless inning.

Cactus League records: Padres 5-3, Diamondbacks 4-5

Up next: The Padres hit the road to Surprise on Saturday against the Texas Rangers. Greg Maddux makes his second start of Cactus League action. He's scheduled to throw three innings as will Wil Ledezma. The Diamondbacks travel to Mesa for a game against the Cubs. Micah Owings gets the start for Arizona.
