Rangers at the plate:
Kevin Mench hit his second home run of the spring, a three-run shot in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ian Kinsler, with a double and a hit-by-pitch, was the only regular to reach base. Ryan Roberts had two singles as a late-inning replacement.
Padres at the plate:
Padres outfielder Chase Headley had a big afternoon, going 2-for-3 with a triple, home run and three RBIs. Tony Clark hit his first home run of the spring with a two-run drive in the first inning. Craig Stansberry also homered for the first time this spring in the eighth inning. Outfielder Vince Sinisi fractured a wrist trying to make a diving catch in the outfield.
Rangers on the mound:
Reliever Frank Francisco had his second successive strong outing, retiring six straight hitters. He has pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings in his last two outings -- allowing just one hit batter -- after allowing four runs in his first two outings. Rookie A.J. Murray struggled in his third start of the Spring, allowing four runs on six hits in two innings.
Padres on the mound:
Greg Maddux breezed through three innings for the Padres. Kinsler was the only baserunner against him in three innings. Kinsler scored on a grounder and sacrifice fly in the first, the only run Maddux has given up in five innings this spring. Wil Ledezma followed Maddux to the mound and allowed one run in three innings.
Cactus League records:
Padres 6-3; Rangers 5-5.
The Rangers travel to Tempe, Ariz., on Sunday to play the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Left-hander Kason Gabbard pitches for the Rangers and right-hander Ervin Santana for the Angels. The Padres are back in Peoria, Ariz., on Sunday for the first of three straight home games. Left-hander Randy Wolf pitches against Jose Contreras for the White Sox.
