Padres on the mound:
Right-hander Chris Young threw three innings in his final tuneup before his first regular season start on April 1. Young gave up two runs on four hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out three. He was also called for a balk when he lost control of the ball during his delivery to the plate.
Mariners on the mound:
Right-hander Felix Hernandez went five innings in his final spring start, giving up three runs on nine hits. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
Cactus League records:
Padres 11-13-3; Mariners 11-15-3
Up next for the Mariners:
The Mariners send right-hander Carlos Silva to the mound against the Chicago Cubs in Las Vegas at 7:15 PT on Friday night. Silva has had a tough spring, although he showed signs of effective pitching at times. He struggled in his last two appearances, including a five-inning stint in a Minor League game his last time out. The Cubs will send southpaw Ted Lilly to the mound in his fifth start.
Up next for the Padres:
Venerable right-hander Greg Maddux completes his spring with his fifth start, facing the Los Angeles Angels at PETCO Park at 7:05 PT on Friday night. Maddux has walked two and struck out six in 11 innings, proving again that he still has pinpoint control. The Angels counter with lefty Joe Saunders, who makes his fourth start and has allowed only five hits over nine innings.
