Padres acquire righty Kelly for catcher Martinez
The Padres acquired Minor League right-handed pitcher Ryan Kelly from the Rangers for catcher Luis Martinez on Wednesday. Kelly will be assigned to Double-A San Antonio, the club announced.

Kelly, 24, is 9-13 with a 4.50 ERA, 20 saves and 235 strikeouts against 66 walks in 121 career Minor League games, including 16 starts, over parts of five seasons with the Pirates (2007-10) and Rangers (2011). Kelly, selected by the Pirates in 26th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, went 3-6 with nine saves and a 3.95 ERA in 40 games, including five starts, for Class A Myrtle Beach last season.

Martinez, 26, made his Major League debut for the Padres last season and hit .203 with one home run, one double, one triple and 10 RBIs in 22 games. He spent most of the season at Triple-A Tucson, where he batted .323 with one home run, 17 doubles, a triple and 28 RBIs in 58 games.

A 12th-round pick by the Padres in 2007 who hit .272 with 12 home runs and 136 RBIs in five Minor League seasons, Martinez was designated for assignment Saturday after a five-player trade that sent pitcher Mat Latos to the Reds. One of the players the Padres received was catching prospect Yasmani Grandal.
