Barrett to DL with facial fractures

|
PHOENIX -- Catcher Michael Barrett will miss a minimum of six weeks after suffering multiple facial fractures, including the orbital bone above his right eye, on Wednesday when he fouled a ball off his face in Colorado.

Barrett, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Friday, the day the Padres opened a three-game series at Chase Field against the Diamondbacks, will have surgery in a week or two, according to manager Bud Black, once the swelling in his face has subsided.

"The early word is he'll have to have some plates and screws in the area," Black said of Barrett, who left the game in Coors Field after fouling a 1-1 pitch off his face during the third inning of a loss to the Rockies.

Barrett remained behind Wednesday in Denver when the team charter flew to Phoenix. He then flew on Thursday from Denver to San Diego to have a full examination by the team doctors at Scripps Clinic.

Barrett also saw an ophthalmologist in San Diego. The ophthalmologist informed the team that there was no eye damage even though there was swelling around Barrett's right eye after the incident.

A CT scan performed in Denver on Wednesday showed that there were no concussion-like symptoms, which was no doubt a relief to Barrett, who missed significant playing time last August with a concussion.

The injury Barrett suffered wasn't unlike the one Padres pitcher Chris Young had on May 21 when he was hit in the face by a line drive off the bat of Albert Pujols. But Barrett's injuries weren't as bad as those suffered by Young, who suffered a small crack in his skull and a deviated septum.

Black was told that Barrett won't be back "on the field for the minimum of six weeks."

"They think there's a reasonable chance he'll be back after six weeks at some point," Black said.

The Padres recalled catcher Nick Hundley from Triple-A Portland to take his place. Hundley will share the catching duties with another rookie, Luke Carlin.
