Since the All-Star break, the Padres have hit 35 home runs, tops in the National League.
The Padres got home runs from Jody Gerut, Brian Giles, Kevin Kouzmanoff and Luke Carlin on Sunday.
Carlin became the seventh Padres player to hit his first Major League home run in 2008. Carlin joins Edgar Gonzalez, Chase Headley, Nick Hundley, Justin Huber (now with Triple-A Portland), Brian Myrow and pitcher Cha Seung Baek.
SD: RHP Cha Seung Baek (4-6, 5.06 ERA)
Baek kept the Padres atop the Mets through 6 1/3 innings on Wednesday, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out five. Other than a hit batsman, Baek's offspeed pitches found their spots and, on other occasions, sneakily ducked under Mets bats. The outing, which lasted 99 pitches, consisted of 65 strikes. He'll now face the Brewers, a team he hasn't faced in his career.
MIL: RHP Jeff Suppan (7-7, 4.70 ERA)
Suppan has worked seven innings to win each of his past two starts after allowing eight runs on 11 hits in a July 27 loss to the Astros at Miller Park. In the wins, he allowed three runs on 12 hits in 14 innings with three walks, none in his most recent outing in Cincinnati. Suppan retired the final nine men he faced in that game and could have escaped damage except for Jay Bruce, who hit an RBI groundout in the first inning and a two-run homer in the third. Suppan is 4-3 in his career against the Padres, despite a 6.23 ERA in nine starts.
Pitcher Shawn Estes made his first Minor League rehabilitation start on Saturday with Class A Lake Elsinore. He allowed two runs in three hits in 1 2/3 innings. He will pitch again on Thursday and his workload will be increased to 60 pitches. ... Brett Tomko allowed one run in one inning Saturday for Triple-A Portland on his injury rehab assignment. ... Giles collected his 1,800th career hit on Sunday on his two-run double in the first inning. Giles later added a two-run home run. And with his two runs scored Sunday, Giles tied Steve Finley for eighth on the Padres' all-time list with 423 runs. ... Greg Maddux, who picked up career victory No. 353 on Saturday, is one victory shy of tying Roger Clemens for eighth on the Major League's all-time list. Maddux earned his 16th career victory against Colorado on Saturday, tying him with Randy Johnson for the most victories against the Rockies. ... Reliever Brian Corey has a strained hamstring and wasn't available to pitch Sunday. The Padres are off on Monday and the team will re-evaluate the right-hander Tuesday.
