Headley deserving of surge at ballot box
SEATTLE -- Padres third baseman Chase Headley has picked a good time to get hot with the bat, though if he's going to make his first National League All-Star team, he's going to need a big push from fans.

Entering Tuesday's game against the Mariners, Headley was hitting .383 over his past 12 games and already had six hits on this nine-game road trip, one that started in Milwaukee, continued here in Seattle before wrapping up this weekend in Oakland.

Among NL third basemen, Headley ranks second to the Mets' David Wright with his .383 on-base percentage. He also ranks third in hits among NL third basemen (59) trailing Hanley Ramirez (Marlins) and Wright.

Better still, Headley has been a terror at the plate away from San Diego's Petco Park. He's hitting .304 on the road with a .409 on-base percentage. Headley could look to pad those numbers as the Padres play 13 more road games before the All-Star rosters are announced on July 1.

Headley has started all but two games this season at third base and has reached base safely in 53 of his past 58 games.

The other Padres on the ballot are first baseman Yonder Alonso, shortstop Jason Bartlett, outfielders Will Venable, Carlos Quentin, Cameron Maybin and catcher Nick Hundley.
