Bard played for the Rookie League Peoria Padres on Wednesday, where he went 0-for-3. On Thursday, he said he felt like he was healthy enough to be activated.
"He came out fine," manager Bud Black said. "He will go through a workout today and, if he's healthy, he could be activated [Friday]."
It doesn't get any easier for the Padres offense Friday, as they will face the National League ERA leader Tim Lincecum. In the Padres' past two games, they faced Brandon Webb and Dan Haren. Between Lincecum, Webb and Haren, they have a combined 46 wins.
SD: RHP Cha Seung Baek (4-8, 4.99 ERA)
Baek pitched well enough to win, but got only one run of support as the Padres fell, 2-1, against the Phillies on Sunday. One of Baek's only mistakes proved to be pretty costly, when Pat Burrell hit his 29th home run of the season. Baek has lasted at least six innings in his past three starts, but only has one win to show for it. Against the Giants, Baek has logged only one career inning, and it was a good one -- as he struck out the side.
SF: RHP Tim Lincecum (13-3, 2.60 ERA)
Lincecum's record matches the second-best in Giants history since the team moved west in 1958. Hall of Famers Gaylord Perry (1966) and Juan Marichal (1968) each posted 14-2 marks. Lincecum has recorded six double-digit strikeout games this season, including one against the Padres on Aug. 1, when he struck out 11. He allowed one run and three hits in seven innings that night, but received a no-decision in a 3-2, 10-inning Giants victory. In four starts this year against San Diego, Lincecum owns a 1.03 ERA (three earned runs in 26 1/3 innings). He personally has won only one of those games, but the Giants have captured all four.
The Padres still haven't decided who will start Saturday afternoon against the Giants at AT&T Park, but the club has ruled out Josh Geer, who pitched Wednesday night for Triple-A Portland. Geer allowed three runs in six innings, as the Beavers defeated Tacoma, 8-5. Dirk Hayhurst, who allowed two runs in relief of Geer, was mentioned as another possibility to get the start Saturday. Hayhurst has only two starts this season for the Beavers. ... Pitcher Chris Young, on the disabled list since Aug. 14, threw a bullpen session before Thursday's game against the D-backs and played catch with Luke Carlin from 120 feet. "I was a little rusty, but my arm felt good," Young said. "It's just a step in the process." Young said he will increase the intensity over the next few sessions.
