Peavy gets rematch with Haren, D-backs

|
SAN FRANCISCO -- Just when the Padres thought they had seen the last of Arizona, the Diamondbacks come to PETCO Park on Monday for the start of a three-game set.

San Diego was recently swept by Arizona in a three-game series and has dropped its last five games against the first-place D-backs.

The D-backs will sent their top three pitchers, Dan Haren, Brandon Webb and Randy Johnson, to the mound in the series. Those three pitchers already have a combined 43 victories this season.

The series will include the Cy Young Award winner from last season (Jake Peavy on Monday) and the pitcher who figures to win it this season, Webb, who already has 19 victories.

Peavy has the top home ERA in baseball (1.42) but has already lost twice to the D-backs this season, though his 3.32 ERA isn't bad by any means.

All 11 of Peavy's starts at PETCO Park this season qualify as "quality starts," meaning he pitched at least six innings in each start and allowed three or fewer runs.

He'll need another quality start if the Padres are to end their seven-game losing streak.

Pitching matchup
SD: RHP Jake Peavy (9-9, 2.84 ERA)
Peavy had an uncharacteristic outing the last time out against the D-backs at Chase Field. Before he even took the mound, he had a 4-0 lead, and the ace couldn't hold on to the lead as the Padres fell, 8-6. In Peavy's previous six starts, he had only received 12 runs of support. The game was anticipated to be a pitchers' duel with Haren on the mound for the D-backs.

ARI: RHP Dan Haren (14-6, 3.12 ERA)
Haren threw a season-low 82 pitches in his last start, but still lasted six innings despite allowing a season-high 11 hits, which produced five runs for the Friars. Haren is 6-1 in his last seven starts. He will likely need better results than Wednesday's to defeat Peavy for the second time in five days. A victory Monday would tie Haren's career high of 15, set last year.

Tidbits
With his home run to lead off the game Sunday, outfielder Brian Giles moved into sole possession of ninth place on the franchise career RBI mark with 376. He also tied Phil Nevin for the seventh-most runs scored (428) in franchise history as well as moved into sole possession of seventh place in hits with 463. ... When pitcher Dirk Hayhurst made his Major League debut Saturday, he became the ninth Padre to do so this season. That's the second most in franchise history behind the 2002 Padres, who had 16 players make Major League debuts that season. ... San Diego manager Bud Black hasn't committed to having Hayhurst make his next start, as Chris Young and/or Shawn Estes could come off the disabled list this coming week. If that's the case, Hayhurst goes into the bullpen.
