Padres agree to terms with Kotsay on contract extension through 2013

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres today announced they have agreed to terms on a contract extension with infielder/outfielder Mark Kotsay through the 2013 season. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.

 

“Mark provides versatility and a very good late-game at-bat,” said Byrnes. “He brings invaluable leadership to our club and has become one of the key members of our team.”

 

Kotsay, 36, has hit .275 (28-for-102) with six doubles, one home run, nine RBI and six runs scored for the Padres this year, including a .290 (9-for-31) mark as a pinch-hitter. The left-handed hitter has made 22 starts in the field for San Diego, including 15 in left field, five in right field and two at first base.

 

A veteran of 16 Major League seasons, Kotsay has spent time with the Florida Marlins (1997-2000), Padres (2001-03, 2012), Oakland A’s (2004-07), Atlanta Braves (2008), Boston Red Sox (2008-09), Chicago White Sox (2009-10) and Milwaukee Brewers (2011) organizations. In 1,783 career games, he has hit .278 (1,745-for-6,268) with 349 doubles, 48 triples, 125 home runs, 703 RBI and 779 runs scored.

 

In Kotsay’s four years with the Padres, he has hit .283 (443-for-1,568) with 90 doubles, 12 triples, 35 home runs, 166 RBI and 219 runs scored in 455 games.
