Headley garners NL Player of Week honors
Chase Headley's hit parade last week earned the Padres' third baseman National League Player of the Week honors on Monday.

Headley posted three multihit efforts and recorded at least one base knock in five of San Diego's six games last week. He hit .333 (8-for-24) while leading the NL with 11 RBIs and tying for the league lead with three home runs.

"There's been some periods [this season] where I've felt pretty good, but the last two-week stretch was as good as I've felt, especially from the left side," said Headley, a switch-hitter. "Scoring runs and driving in runs are the two most important things you can do. We've had a good offensive week. A lot of guys have been swinging the bats so well."

He also slugged .750, totaled 18 bases and scored six runs.

Headley went deep twice in San Diego's series-opening win over the Pirates on Friday, driving in five runs. His first home run -- in the sixth inning -- came from the left side of the plate, while his second -- a go-ahead two-run shot in the seventh -- came from the right side.

It was Headley's third multihomer game of his career, and his first time going deep from both sides of the plate in the same contest.

Headley also went 2-for-3 on Wednesday as the Padres completed a three-game sweep of the Cubs, one day after going 2-for-4 and driving in two runs.

"I think it's well deserved," Padres manager Bud Black said. "He had a great week. Chase, if you think about it, flies a little under the radar, nationally."

Headley, 28, already has posted career bests in homers (18) and RBIs (71) this season. This is his first weekly award.
