SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres today announced they have selected left-handed pitcher Tom Layne from Double-A San Antonio and designated left-handed pitcher Alex Hinshaw for assignment. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.

Layne, 27, has split this season between Triple-A Reno in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization as well as Triple-A Tucson and Double-A San Antonio in the Padres organization. In 32 games (two starts) with San Antonio, he has gone 0-5 with a 3.28 ERA (13 ER/35.2 IP). Originally signed by the Diamondbacks as a 26th-round selection of the 2007 Draft, Layne was acquired by the Padres from the Diamondbacks in exchange for cash considerations on May 3 earlier this year.  Over parts of six minor league seasons in the Diamondbacks and Padres organizations, Layne has gone 38-42 with a 4.50 ERA (329 ER/658.0 IP) in 189 games (94 starts).

Hinshaw, 29, has made 31 relief appearances for the Padres this year, going 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA (14 ER/28.0 IP). Over parts of three Major League seasons with the San Francisco Giants (2008-09) and Padres (2012), he has gone 3-2 with a 4.52 ERA (37 ER/73.2 IP) in 88 career relief appearances.
