Headley adds Wilson defensive honor to mantel

SAN DIEGO -- Gold Glove Award winning third baseman Chase Headley has been honored by Wilson as the Padres' Defensive Player of the Year.

The sporting goods company Wilson named one standout defensive player from each of Major League Baseball's 30 teams, as well as one overall individual winner from each league and one team winner.

Atlanta's Michael Bourn won the National League's individual award, while the Braves took home the team hardware.

Last week, Headley won his first Gold Glove Award.

Headley played more innings than any other third baseman in baseball (1,397) and compiled the most total chances (424) in the NL. He had 10 errors and posted the second-best fielding percentage (.976) among all Major League third basemen, trailing only the Brewers' Aramis Ramirez (.977).

"I do like to model myself after the old-time player as far as playing every day," Headley said last week.

Headley also started 159 games, the most among NL third basemen.

As far as awards go, Headley might not be finished.

He figures to garner some votes in the race for the NL Most Valuable Player Award.

Headley, who had a breakout season offensively, leading the NL in RBIs with 115, could be in the running for one of the 21 categories that will be a part of MLB.com's GIBBY Awards next month.

This year's GIBBY Awards feature nominees in 21 categories. Individual honors will go to the MLB MVP, in addition to the year's best starting pitcher, hitter, closer, setup man, rookie, breakout hitter, breakout pitcher, comeback player, defensive player, manager, executive and postseason performer.

GIBBY trophies also will be awarded for the year's top play, storyline, hitting performance, pitching performance, oddity, walk-off, Cut4 topic and postseason moment, from MLB.com's Must C highlight reels.

Winners will be presented their GIBBY trophies at the MLB.com Greatness in Baseball Yearly Awards extravaganza during the Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tenn., on Tuesday, Dec. 4.
