Padres want to keep, not trade Headley

Padres want to keep, not trade Headley
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- On the day the Yankees learned Alex Rodriguez could miss between four to six months to have left hip surgery, there was no shortage of speculation of where New York would look for a replacement at third base.

And not surprisingly, the name of Padres third baseman Chase Headley was mentioned as a potential target in the press, even though San Diego has no interest in trading him.

Informed that the Yankees supposedly like Headley, Padres general manager Josh Byrnes offered up a succinct observation of his own.

"So do we," he said, smiling.

But enough to give Headley a contract extension?

"We've had very broad talks," Byrnes said on Monday. "It's worth a discussion, but we have two more years with him. That's a lot of time."

Headley, who led the National League with 115 RBIs, is arbitration-eligible and could command in excess of $7 million next year. He's under team control through the 2014 season.

Headley hit 31 home runs and batted .286. He finished the season on a roll, capturing the NL Player of the Month Award in August and September.

With those torrid months, Headley became the first player in franchise history to knock in 30 or more runs in a month twice.

The home runs and RBIs were both career bests for Headley, who finished fifth in the NL MVP Award voting last month and won his first Gold Glove and Silver Slugger Awards.

Byrnes indicated last month that teams have stopped calling and asking about Headley, because there's an unstated sentiment that he's going nowhere. On Monday, Byrnes made it clear that the Padres are trying to build around Headley, not move him.

"We're really not having those discussions at all," he said.
