Padres acquire RHP Wilfredo Boscan from Texas

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres today announced they have acquired right-handed pitcher Wilfredo Boscan from the Texas Rangers as part of a completion for a previous trade in exchange for right-handed pitcher Cory Burns.  In addition, the club selected infielder Diego Goris and right-handed pitcher Federico Castaneda from the Kansas City Royals organization in the Triple-A phase of the 2012 Rule 5 Draft.  The club also had infielder Nate Freiman selected in the second round of the Major League phase by the Houston Astros and outfielder Sawyer Carroll selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the Triple-A Phase.  Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcements.

Boscan, 23, went 7-5 with a 3.75 ERA (41 ER/98.1 IP) and 89 strikeouts against 28 walks over 34 games, nine starts, for Double-A Frisco in the Rangers organization this past season.  The Venezuelan has gone 38-44 with a 4.00 ERA (282 ER/634.1 IP) and 496 strikeouts against 149 walks in 139 games, 102 starts over parts of six minor league seasons (2007-12) in the Rangers organization. 

Goris, 21, hit .333 (78-for-234) with 14 doubles, four triples, 13 home runs, 51 RBI and 41 runs scored in 58 games played between the Royals Rookie-Level affiliate and Single-A Idaho this past season.  A native of the Dominican Republic, he was originally signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates as a non-drafted free agent in May of 2008 and acquired by the Royals in a three-player trade with the Pirates in December of 2011.  Over parts of five minor league seasons in the Pirates (2008-11) and Royals (2012) organizations, he has hit .309 (323-for-1045) with 51 doubles, 16 triples, 24 home runs, 168 RBI and 178 runs scored in 277 games played. 

Castaneda, 28, went 2-4 with a 5.71 ERA (33 ER/52.0 IP) and 52 strikeouts against 15 walks over 51 relief appearances in the Mexican League this past season.  The Mexico native was originally signed by the Royals as a non-drafted free agent in November of 2008.

Freiman, 25, hit .298 (154-for-516) with 31 doubles, one triple, 24 home runs, 105 RBI and 80 runs scored in 137 games played for Double-A San Antonio last season, leading the Texas League in RBI.  He was originally signed by the Padres as an eighth-round selection out of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft.  Over parts of four minor league seasons (2009-12) in the Padres organization, he hit .294 (551-for-1876) with 131 doubles, five triples, 71 home runs, 368 RBI and 280 runs scored in 483 games played. 

Carroll, 26, hit .263 (98-for-372) with 15 doubles, six triples, eight home runs, 56 RBI and 46 runs scored in 112 games for Triple-A Tucson this past season.  The outfielder was originally signed by the Padres as a third-round selection out of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft.  Over parts of five minor league seasons (2008-12) in the Padres organization, he hit .274 (550-for-2010) with 117 doubles, 27 triples, 49 home runs, 325 RBI and 298 runs scored in 564 games played.
