Padres agree to terms with Headley on one-year contract for 2013 season

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres today announced that they have agreed to terms with infielder Chase Headley on a one-year contract for the 2013 season.   Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.

Headley, 28, set career highs in nearly every offensive category in 2012, hitting .286 (173-for-604) with 31 doubles, two triples, 31 home runs, 115 RBI and 95 runs scored in 161 games played.  His 115 RBI this past year led the National League, becoming just the second player in Padres history to lead the league in RBI, joining Dave Winfield who also did so with 118 RBI in 1979.

Following the season, Headley finished fifth in NL Most Valuable Player voting and was named the Padres MVP by the San Diego chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA).  The switch-hitter also took home his first career Rawlings Gold Glove and Louisville Silver Slugger awards.  Over parts of six Major League seasons with San Diego (2007-12), he has hit .273 (679-for-2487) with 139 doubles, 10 triples, 67 home runs, 319 RBI, 312 runs scored and 61 stolen bases in 690 games played.

With today's agreement the Padres have one arbitration-eligible player remaining, left-handed pitcher Clayton Richard.
