SAN DIEGO -- Less than a week before pitchers and catchers report to Arizona for Spring Training, the Padres made a move to bolster their relief corps on Wednesday, claiming right-handed pitcher Fautino De Los Santos off waivers from the Brewers and adding him to the 40-man roster.
In a corresponding move, the team designated infielder Jeudy Valdez for assignment.
De Los Santos, 26, spent the 2012 season as a member of the A's and later the Brewers. He had a 3.00 ERA in six games before being traded to the Brewers for catcher George Kottaras on July 28.
De Los Santos didn't pitch in the Major Leagues for the Brewers but compiled a 2-3 record and a 5.80 ERA in 49 2/3 innings at the Triple-A level in the A's and Brewers system.
De Los Santos appeared in 34 games with the A's and had a 4.32 ERA in 2011. He signed with the White Sox as a non-drafted free agent in 2005 and was traded to the A's with Gio Gonzalez and Ryan Sweeney in the Nick Swisher deal in January 2008.
Valdez, 23, hit .225 with 12 home runs and 46 RBIs last season with Double-A San Antonio. Valdez hit .303 in 18 games during the Arizona Fall League.
