Padres agree to terms with LHP Clayton Richard

PEORIA, AZ – The San Diego Padres tonight announced that they have agreed to terms with left-handed pitcher Clayton Richard on a one-year contract for the 2013 season.   Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.

Richard, 29, led the club with a career-best tying 14 wins, 218.2 innings pitched and 33 starts in 2012, going 14-14 with a 3.99 ERA (97 ER/218.2 IP) overall on the season.  Following the season the southpaw was unanimously voted the Padres Pitcher of the Year (Clyde McCullough Award) by the San Diego Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA).  Over parts of five Major League seasons with the Chicago White Sox (2008-09) and Padres (2009-12), he has gone 44-42 with a 4.13 ERA (331 ER/720.2 IP) and 456 strikeouts against 242 walks in 135 games, 118 starts.

With tonight’s announcement, all arbitration eligible players for the Padres are now under contract for the 2013 season.
