Vincent to stay in Arizona to continue rehab

PEORIA, Ariz. -- The Padres continued to thin their big league roster on Sunday, as they released pitcher Freddy Garcia and optioned reliever Nick Vincent to Triple-A Tucson.

The Padres have 39 players in big league camp. The team breaks camp after Thursday's game before heading to San Antonio for two exhibition games against the Rangers.

Vincent, who hasn't appeared in a game since Feb. 28, received good news about the soreness he has had in his lower forearm, which he was told were inflamed tendons. He resumed throwing last week and will remain in Arizona for extended spring training to build his stamina and endurance before he joins a team.

"He hasn't pitched in a month," Padres manager Bud Black said. "This is sort of his Spring Training."

Vincent, who had a 1.71 ERA in 27 games last season, would have likely been in the mix for a spot in the bullpen had he been healthy.
