Padres 'pen proving mighty

|

SAN DIEGO -- Entering Wednesday, the Padres ranked 29th in the big leagues in average innings pitched by starting pitchers (4.96 innings). Despite that heavy workload, the bullpen is thriving.

Over the past eight games, the bullpen has a 0.98 ERA in 27 2/3 innings, including 7 1/3 scoreless innings in Tuesday's loss to the Brewers. Better still, the bullpen has not allowed a run in the last 16 2/3 innings.

Overall, the Padres bullpen has a 3.10 ERA with 62 strikeouts in 29 games this season. Their 72 2/3 innings pitched entering play Wednesday tied them for third in the Major Leagues with the Pirates behind the Astros (83.2) and Blue Jays (74.1).
