Padres take first lefty, draft Schoenrock in Round 11

Erik Schoenrock, whose father Daron is the coach at the University of Memphis, made the most of his first season in the Tigers' rotation. Schoenrock was 4-2 with a 2.21 ERA with 51 strikeouts in 53 innings this past season as a junior at Memphis, and the Padres selected the left-hander in the 11th round (328th overall) as their first pick on the third day of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft.

Schoenrock was named Conference USA Pitcher of the Year and beat Marshall right-hander Aaron Blair, who was drafted 36th overall by the D-backs.

2013 Draft Central

Schoenrock was the sixth pitcher drafted by San Diego, but the previous five had all been right-handed.

Schoenrock has a good feel for pitching, attacking hitters with a three-pitch mix. His fastball sits in the upper-80s and touches 91 mph. He also throws a good changeup and a curveball that has the potential to be an above-average offering.

Schoenrock might return to the bullpen as a professional, where he could move quickly as a left-handed specialist.
