Future Friars to be on display in St. Louis

Future Friars to be on display in St. Louis

|
The Padres will showcase two of their brightest prospects during the 11th annual XM All-Star Futures Game next month in St. Louis.

Right-handed pitcher Mat Latos, considered the prized arm of the Padres' organization, will compete for the United States while outfielder Luis Durango will play for the World team.

The XM All-Star Futures Game, pitting the best Minor League prospects from the United States against the best from the rest of the World, will be held at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on All-Star Sunday, July 12, at 11 a.m. ET.

MLB.com will provide complete coverage before, during and after the game, which can be seen live on ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD and followed live on Gameday.

Mat Latos, RHP, Double-A, San Antonio (U.S. Team)
It's already been a big season for Latos, who started the season in the Class A Midwest League and has leaped past the higher-level Class A California League to the Double-A Texas League.

Latos went 3-0 with a 0.36 ERA in four games with 27 strikeouts in 25 1/3 innings. Latos was then promoted to San Antonio where he has gone 4-1 with a 2.18 ERA in his first six starts with 37 strikeouts in 33 innings.

There has been talk that if the 22-year-old keeps dominating at the Double-A level that the Padres might promote him to the Major League club.

Luis Durango, OF, Double-A, San Antonio (World Team) Durango played with Panama in the World Baseball Classic before reporting to Double-A San Antonio where he has done nothing but hit -- and run -- since Opening Day.

Durango was hitting .302 with 75 hits in his first 67 games. He had a .406 on-base mark over that same 67-game stretch with 26 stolen bases. Durango is truly a singles hitter, as he has only eight extra-base hits.

The 23-year-old Durango hit .328 last season between two Minor League stops in the Padres farm system.
