Padres call up Cedeno to play short for Cabrera

As expected, the Padres on Tuesday selected the contract of Ronny Cedeno from Class A Lake Elsinore. The move came one day after starting shortstop Everth Cabrera was suspended 50 games for violating MLB's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Cedeno started this season with the Astros, hitting .220 with one home run, 12 RBIs and 12 runs scored in 51 games before being designated for assignment on July 22. With Cabrera's suspension looming, the Padres signed Cedeno to a Minor League deal on Friday. He subsequently went 1-for-8 with a double, two walks and a run scored in two games with Lake Elsinore.

Along with his brief stint with the Astros, Cedeno has spent time with the Mets, Pirates, Mariners and Cubs during his nine-year Major League career. Though primarily a shortstop, he has also logged time at second base, third base and left field, while also playing one inning at first base for Houston on April 7.

Cedeno, 30, is a .245 lifetime hitter with 38 home runs, 230 RBIs and 253 runs scored.
