Maybin to avoid knee surgery

LOS ANGELES -- Outfielder Cameron Maybin has received a second opinion on his injured left knee, one that came as a great relief to the Padres.

Maybin, who missed his 69th game Friday after tearing his posterior cruciate ligament, saw Reds team doctor Timothy Kremchek in Cincinnati and was told he won't need surgery and could potentially play winter ball.

"We'll try to get him ready for a possible winter-ball situation," said Padres manager Bud Black. "... But getting him ready for this season is a little bit of a reach."

If Maybin doesn't play again in 2013, and it doesn't appear he will, he will have appeared in 14 games, hitting .232 in 51 at-bats. Maybin is making $3 million this season and will make $5 million in 2014.

"He'll continue with the plan our medical staff has in place," Black said. "But I think that [news of no surgery] was reassurance for Cam. With the PCL, it just takes time."

Maybin missed 45 games earlier this season on the disabled list with an impingement of his right wrist.
