|

Major League Baseball announced today that Padres closer Huston Street has been named the National League Player of the Week for the week of September 2-8. The announcement was made on MLB Network.

Street, 30, was 1-0 with four saves in four opportunities with a 1.80 ERA (1 ER, 5.0 IP) in five games last week. The right-hander is 2-0 and is 14-for-14 in save opportunities with a 0.39 ERA (1 ER, 23.1 IP) and 22 strikeouts over his last 23 relief appearances, limiting opposing hitters to a .130 (10-for-77) batting average. Overall this season he is 2-4, 29-for-30 in save opportunities with a 2.72 ERA (15 ER, 49.2 IP) in 50 relief appearances. Street posted 20.1 consecutive scoreless innings between June 26th and September 3rd, the longest scoreless streak by a Padres player this season.

Over the last two seasons, his 96.3 save percentage (52-for-54) is the best in the Majors, while posting a 2.33 ERA (23 ER, 88.2 IP) with 84 strikeouts in 90 relief appearances.

The weekly award is the second of his career (also June 14, 2009 while with the Rockies). He is the second Padres player to be honored as Player of the Week this season, joining Will Venable who was honored as the NL Player of the Week for August 12-18.

In recognition of his National League Player of the Week Award, Street will be awarded a watch courtesy of Game Time, the leader in licensed sports watches, available at MLB.com.
