Padres Make Two Selections on First Day of 2014 First-Year Player Draft


SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres selected two players on the first day of Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft today, one in each of the first two rounds. The 40-round draft continues tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. PT with rounds 3-10. Rounds 11-40 will take place on Sunday.

In the first round, the Padres selected shortstop Trea Turner with the 13th overall pick out of North Carolina State University. Recommended by Padres Area Scout Tyler Stubblefield, Turner hit .321 (69-for-215) this past season for the Wolfpack, collecting 12 doubles, three triples, eight home runs, 65 runs scored, 26 stolen bases along with a .418 on-base percentage as well as a .516 slugging percentage in 54 games as a junior in 2014. The right-handed hitting infielder ranked among the Atlantic Coast Conference leaders in several offensive categories during the 2014 season, including: runs (1st), stolen bases (1st), home runs (T-4th), slugging percentage (T-4th) and total bases (54, T-5th). 

In the second round, the club selected outfielder Michael Gettys with the 51st overall pick out of Gainesville High School in Gainesville, GA. Recommended by Padres Area Scout Andrew Salvo, the 18-year-old outfielder hit for a .372 batting average (32-for-86) with seven doubles, nine home runs, 33 runs scored, 14 stolen bases and 40 RBI with a .452 on-base percentage and .767 slugging percentage in 28 games during his senior season for the Red Elephants in 2014. In addition to his work at the plate, the 6-1, 210 pound outfielder pitched to a 5-3 record with a 1.25 ERA (8 ER, 44.2 IP) with 71 strikeouts against 14 walks while limiting the opposition to a .220 average in eight appearances on the mound. Gettys, who was rated by Baseball America as the 40th-best prospect in the 2014 Draft field and the ninth-best outfield prospect, is committed to attend the University of Georgia in the fall. The right-handed hitter participated in the 2013 Perfect Game All-American Classic at Petco Park.
