San Diego remained hitter-friendly on the second day of the First-Year Player Draft as the club selected Ole Miss outfielder Auston Bousfield in the fifth round with the 147th overall pick.
Bousfield, who will play against Louisiana-Lafayette in an NCAA Super Regional game on Saturday, hit .349 with six home runs and 48 RBIs and 17 steals in 62 games.
Bousfield was recommended by Padres scout Andrew Salvo, who also recommended outfielder and second-round pick Michael Gettys on Thursday.
"Sold defense at all three outfield spots, but definitely stick in center field," Salvo said. [He has a] feel to hit with surprising power for his size. He does all the little things right. He's instinctual."
With the selection of Bousfield in the fifth round, the Padres selected four position players in their first five picks.
The Draft concludes on Saturday, with exclusive coverage of Rounds 11-40 beginning on MLB.com at 10 a.m. PT.
