SAN DIEGO -- The Padres opened their house on Thursday and opened the microphones to some 3,500 fans who attended an open house at PETCO Park.
Padres CEO Jeff Moorad, team president Tom Garfinkel, general manager Jed Hoyer and manager Bud Black answered questions from fans during a nearly two-hour event, where fans were treated to hot dogs and other concessions.
Several Padres players, like Tony Gwynn, Kevin Correia, Kyle Blanks and others, were on-hand to give away hot peanuts and Cracker Jacks on a cool night.
Moorad was asked how the Friars can hope to keep their players in San Diego over time, a question framed against a reference to popular pitcher Jake Peavy, who was dealt to the White Sox last July and with Adrian Gonzalez being a hot topic.
"I understand what it is like to root for individual players," Moorad told fans, who had an opportunity to purchase full-season and other season-ticket plans. "But you have to focus on the name on the front of the uniform first.
"It is a business. Whether we can keep Adrian remains to be seen. We will talk to him at some appropriate time. Our goal is to support the name on the front of the uniform."
Fans applauded the recent trade that landed outfielder Scott Hairston, though there was a smattering of boos when the player the Padres traded for Hairston, third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff, was mentioned.
Those in attendance also gave a favorable round of applause at the mention of the Padres' newest player, starting pitcher Jon Garland, who earlier in the week agreed to a one-year deal with a mutual option for 2011.
New television broadcaster Dick Enberg had a taped message played on the scoreboard. Enberg is currently in Australia, broadcasting the Australian Open.
Garfinkel took his time at the podium to talk about helping make the Padres the "best franchise in professional sports."
One fan Thursday, an elderly woman, asked when the Padres were going to win the World Series and stated that she wasn't getting any younger.
Moorad talked about his thoughts on putting a winning product on the field for fans.
"Make no mistake about it, that's why we're here. At the end of the day, that's all that matters," Moorad said.
