LOS ANGELES -- The Padres' first-round Draft pick, No. 13 overall, is on the move -- and moving up. The team promoted shortstop Trea Turner from short-season Eugene to Class A Fort Wayne of the Midwest League.

Turner had three hits on Friday in his final game for Eugene before being told he was heading to low-A.

Turner hit .228 with one home run, two RBIs, 19 strikeouts and nine steals in 23 games and 92 at-bats for Eugene.

"He has displayed the athleticism, speed and defensive ability that made him our first-round selection," said Padres vice president of player development, Randy Smith. "We believe with his experience he will respond to the challenge of playing in the Midwest League."

This move isn't unlike the ones the Padres have made in recent years with college Draft picks like infielders Cory Spangenberg (2011) and Jedd Gyorko (2010) and, a year ago, outfielder Hunter Renfroe.
