Tests reveal contusion in Hairston's hand

Tests reveal contusion in Hairston's hand

|
PEORIA, Ariz. -- The debut of the Hairston brothers hitting at the top of the Padres' lineup on Saturday sure didn't last long.

Outfielder Scott Hairston left the game in the third inning after he was hit on the left hand by an offering by Mariners pitcher Sean White.

A X-ray revealed that Hairston has a contusion. A broken blood vessel in the hand led to immediate swelling and apprehension and a lot of anxiety on his part.

"Initially, when I first got hit, you're hoping for the best, but when I looked down I saw a knot on my hand," Hairston said on Sunday morning.

He was encouraged when initial tests determined that he had good mobility and strength in the hand.

"He told me he would be fine," manager Bud Black said.

The plan for Hairston is to try to swing a bat on Monday before the Padres face the Rockies at the Peoria Sports Complex.

"If it feels better by then, I'll start swinging the bat and maybe be able to play," Hairston said.

Hairston, who went 0-for-1 on Saturday before being hit, batted second in the lineup. Brother Jerry, hitting leadoff, went 3-for-3 with two doubles while making his spring debut at shortstop.
