Matheny wins challenge to complete double play

SAN DIEGO -- Cardinals manager Mike Matheny won a challenge on Wednesday night to help reliever Carlos Martinez close the sixth inning with a double play.

Martinez, with one out and Padres baserunners on first and second, induced a ground ball to short off the bat of eight-hole hitter Will Venable. Jhonny Peralta flipped the ball to second baseman Kolten Wong for one out, and Wong's relay throw arrived at first about the same time as Venable.

First-base umpire Brian Gorman ruled Venable safe, a call that would be overturned via replay after a two-minute, 56-second review, with the Padres holding a 4-0 lead. It marked just the third successful challenge in 17 tries for Matheny this season.
