Rangers at the plate: Julio Borbon sparked a four-run first inning and a two-run second inning with a pair of leadoff singles. He also had a walk later in the game, allowing him to reach base in three of four plate appearances. He is hitting .348 for the spring. Chris Davis was 3-for-4 with three singles.Padres at the plate: Kyle Blanks had a double in three plate appearances and is now hitting .412 on the spring. Matt Antonelli raised his average to .471 with three singles.
Worth noting: Vladimir Guerrero has a reputation for being a free swinger but walked on four straight pitches in his first two plate appearances on Friday. Cactus League records: Rangers 3-4; Padres 2-7 Up next: Brandon McCarthy and Luis Mendoza pitch against the Indians at 2:05 p.m. CT on Saturday in Goodyear. McCarthy is trying to win a spot in the rotation but allowed two runs on four hits and a walk in a start against the Angels last week. Mendoza is also trying to win a spot on the pitching staff while being out of options. He has to either make the team or be exposed to outright waivers before he can be sent to the Minors. The Padres hit the road on Saturday for a 12:05 p.m. PT game against the Athletics. Kevin Correia gets the start for the Padres and is scheduled to throw four innings. But the pitcher the Padres will be keeping their eye on is reliever Mark Worrell, who will throw his first pitch in a game since he had Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery on March 25 of last spring. Worrell has progressed quickly and will throw one inning against the A's. Worrell is one of a handful of pitchers contending for spots in the bullpen. He'll likely open the season with Triple-A Portland.
