The Padres began the process of whittling down their roster Monday by reassigning three players to Minor League camp. The Padres also optioned four additional players to either Triple-A Portland or Double-A San Antonio.
None of the seven players figured to have a shot at making the Padres' 25-man Opening Day roster next month.
The three players reassigned to Minor League camp were catcher Mitch Canham, catcher Michael Collins and right-handed pitcher Jackson Quezada.
Left-handed pitchers Aaron Poreda and Cesar Ramos were optioned to Portland. Another left-handed pitcher, Steve Garrison, and right-handed pitcher Craig Italiano were sent to San Antonio.
Garrison is recovering from knee surgery and won't be able to pitch until midsummer.
Poreda, who allowed nine earned runs and seven walks in 2 1/3 innings, and Ramos will be part of what figures to be a deep staff in Portland.
The Padres now have 47 players in Major League camp, including 36 players on the 40-man roster and 11 non-roster invitees.
