Padres at the plate: Will Venable continued his impressive spring with a double in the first inning. He also drew a walk in the seventh inning. The Padres were able to get on the scoreboard in the seventh when they drew three walks. Yorvit Torrealba got the RBI when he drew a bases-loaded walk off Jordan Norberto. Chase Headley added some insurance in the eighth with a two-run bloop single to left off Esmerling Vasquez.D-backs at the plate: Chris Snyder singled in each of his first two at-bats. The D-backs were done in by the double-play ball, grounding into four of them. Hitting leadoff for the second straight day, Conor Jackson was 1-for-3 with a walk. The D-backs had a scoring opportunity in the sixth with runners at second and third and one out, but Adam LaRoche struck out and after an intentional walk to Mark Reynolds, Kelly Johnson grounded out. John Hester belted a two-run homer in the ninth inning.
D-backs on the mound: Ian Kennedy bounced back nicely from his struggles against the Angels last week. The right-hander allowed just two hits over five shutout innings. Not normally a strikeout pitcher, Kennedy fanned eight and did not walk a batter. Juan Gutierrez continued his outstanding spring. With his one inning of work, he has now gone six frames this spring without allowing a run.Worth noting: Before the game, the D-backs reassigned catcher Carlos Corporan, outfielder Evan Frey and infielder Ed Rodgers to Minor League camp. The Padres lead the Majors in stolen bases this spring. Cactus League records: Padres 9-9; D-backs 9-10-1 Up next:
The Padres will get another look at pitcher Kevin Correia on Tuesday when the right-hander gets the start at 1:05 p.m. PT against the Rockies at Hi Corbett Field. Correia has a 7.27 ERA in three games this spring. He led the team in victories last season (12) and projects somewhere in the top three in the starting rotation. Correia will likely work in upwards of five innings against the Rockies.
The D-backs have their lone scheduled day off on Tuesday, but not everyone will be relaxing. Rodrigo Lopez and Kevin Mulvey, who are both fighting for spots in the starting rotation will pitch in Minor League games against the Rockies. Mulvey will pitch in a Double-A game while Lopez will face Colorado's Triple-A team. When the D-backs get back in action Wednesday against the White Sox in Glendale, right-hander Billy Buckner will try and rebound from a terrible last outing against the Royals.
