The Padres optioned left-hander Ryan Buchter to Triple-A El Paso on Saturday afternoon, amid a handful of roster moves that included optioning Nick Noonan back to El Paso, and recalling infielder/outfielder Patrick Kivlehan and left-hander Keith Hessler.

Ryan James Buchter…graduated from Highland Regional High School (NJ)…attended Gloucester County College (NJ)…originally signed by Nationals' scout Alex Smith.

2016

Had a career season, setting career highs in every category…recorded 78 strikeouts in 63.0 innings pitched for a ratio of 11.14 strikeouts per 9.0 innings, tied for the 13th-best mark among all NL relievers in 2016. Made his second career Opening Day roster and went 1-0 with one save, a 0.77 ERA (2 ER, 23.1 IP), 33 strikeouts against 11 walks and a .135 (10-for-74) opponents batting average over his first 25 outings of the year through May. Overall on the season he allowed a .160 (34-for-212) opponents average, the second-best mark allowed by any qualifying NL reliever (150 batters faced), behind only Kenley Jansen (.150), and fifth-best among all relievers, behind also Craig Kimbrel (.152), Aroldis Chapman (.158) and Andrew Miller (.160). Had one stint in the minors, being optioned on 8/20 to Triple-A El Paso, before being recalled on 9/1 for the remainder of the season. Worked scoreless ball in 59 of his 67 outings on the year…allowed a combined 13 runs, all earned, in three outings, posting a 1.03 ERA (7 ER, 61.0 IP) in his other 64 outings on the year. Per Fangraphs.com he posted a WAR of 1.1 on the season, 13th-best among qualifying NL relievers. Held left-handers to a .147 (11-for-75) average while right-handers hit just .168 (23-for-137) against him…his four home runs allowed were all to right-handers. Split the season between Triple-A Oklahoma City in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization and Triple-A Iowa in the Chicago Cubs organization, going a combined 2-0 with a 1.78 ERA (10 ER, 50.2 IP) and 62 strikeouts against 25 walks in 43 total relief appearances....Began the year with Oklahoma City, posting a 1.65 ERA (6 ER, 32.2 IP) and 39 strikeouts against 16 walks in 27 relief appearances before being released by the Dodgers on 7/21....Named a Pacific Coast League Mid-Season All-Star for Oklahoma City....Signed with the Cubs as a minor league free agent on 7/26 and went 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA (4 ER, 18.0 IP) and 23 strikeouts against nine walks over 16 relief appearances for Triple-A Iowa....Pitched for Tomateros de Culiacan in the Mexican Winter League following the season, going 3-0 with 10 saves in 10 chances along with a 0.72 ERA (2 ER, 25.0 IP) and 35 strikeouts against 10 walks over 23 relief outings.

2014

Played the majority of the season with Triple-A Gwinnett before seeing his first Major League action with the Braves with one relief outing....Made his first career Opening Day roster for Atlanta, being recalled before the start of the season on 3/29 for his first career Major League call-up but did not see any action before being optioned back to Gwinnett on 4/2....With Gwinnett went 3-3 with a 3.29 ERA(23 ER, 63.0 IP) and 63 strikeouts against 40 walks over 49 relief appearances....Recalled a second time by Atlanta on 6/20 and made his Major League debut for the Braves that day at WSH, earning the win for his first career victory after a scoreless inning of relief…originally signed by the Nationals in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft…optioned back to Gwinnett on 6/25.

2013

Spent his first full season with Triple-A Gwinnett, where he went 4-0 with a 2.76 ERA, while logging 103 strikeouts in 62.0 innings spanning 51 relief appearances. Converted each of his five save opportunities. In his eighth minor league season, set career highs in strikeouts (103) and appearances (51). His 103 strikeouts paced all Braves minor league relievers and ranked second on the Gwinnett club. Ranked fifth among Braves minor league relievers in appearances and opponents' batting average (.168). Recorded at least three strikeouts in 18 of his 51 appearances, including a season high six on 7/12 (2.0 IP). Allowed one earned run over his first 11 appearances (0.82 ERA, 11.0 IP, 19 K) of the season. Closed out the season with a 14-game (17.1 IP) scoreless streak, his longest such streak of the season.
